FON Using OpenWRT to build Wifi Storage

200611051144This is pretty sweet. Fon is using OpenWRT (an open Linksys firmware image running Linux) for their new Wifi storage device.

Liberator is based on an OpenWRT operating system and has a bundled web server. Among other features, FON is bundling applications into this new router. For instance, it is going to bundle a special BitTorrent client with the new device. It will also have features for folks to upload photos to say their Flickr account or videos to YouTube.

It’s funny how good ideas take so long to see the light of day. Many of my friends have talked about a similar device for years. Hopefully Fon can make some money here and keep innovating.
