Named Anchors within Video – Permalinks for Minute and Second

Great find by Steve Rubel. Apparently Google Video now has support for permalinks within the video.

Google Video in a move that ups YouTube has added a way for anyone to link to a specific part of a video. All you need to do is append the time in this format (#1m35s) to the video URL.

I think this will go a long way towards really bringing political commentary into the blogosphere. Granted its alive and well right now but the majority of politics still happens on television. Blogs like Crooks and Liars do a great job at bridging the gap but it hasn’t been possible to reply to a political speech like I can with a blog post.

This really hit me during the 2003 State of the Union. I really wanted to build a running commentary about where he went wrong, what was based on circular logic, and what were just plain lies. The technology wasn’t there so I just couldn’t easily do it without building my own flash app (in hindsight this was a great startup opportunity).

Hopefully more of the online video sites will integrate this named anchor format into their sites. RFC anyone?

  1. You quote Steve Rubel: “Google Video in a move that ups YouTube has added a way for anyone to link to a specific part of a video.

We were doing this years ago in Real with SMIL. What’s old is new again?

  2. Steve:

Have you heard of Click.TV (http://www.click.tv)? We have lots more in store in this area in the near future.
